Who’d be keen on coming to church on the 4th of July, of all days? Quite a few people, actually, if you organize an Independence Day event that has them sitting up and paying attention.
Just try these three 4th of July church ideas, which other churches like yours have successfully used to get in on the action in previous years!
And because you’ll need to market your chosen event, we’ll also share three tips for doing exactly that.
3 Fourth of July events your church can organize
1. Hold a special 4th of July service
The 4th of July may not fall on a Sunday this year, but this doesn’t mean you can’t hold a 4th of July church service nevertheless!
Folks may enjoy heading down to church to commemorate this special occasion, and join in for some praise and worship, before soaking up the festivities for the rest of the day.
Just like how the Berean Christian Church (Gwinnett Co.) organized a special 4th of July worship service last year:
During the special service, deliver a church sermon on the significance of the 4th of July. The Ministry Voice blog suggests discussing the concept of freedom in the Bible using topics such as:
- Freedom from death
- Freedom from sin
- Freedom to choose our own path
- Freedom to proclaim the Gospel
- Freedom to enjoy life in Christ
2. Host a family hangout
Due to the busyness of life, families may not always spend quality time with each other—even if they live under the same roof.
So create an opportunity for them to interact and bond by organizing a 4th of July family hangout session!
This is what the CityHill Northshore church did last year for the 4th of July:
A 4th of July family hangout is exactly what it sounds like: it’s an event where families come together to celebrate Independence Day.
The hangout could be picnic-style, where each family brings its own food and picnic mats to spread out on the church premises. Alternatively, you could charge a small fee to provide refreshments.
Either way, organize some games to add some excitement to the hangout, too. Ball games are always great, as are obstacle courses. And don’t forget to prepare some simple prizes!
3. Organize a fireworks celebration
What is the 4th of July without fireworks!?
Throwing a fireworks celebration in the evening can just do the trick in drawing people to your church for the 4th of July. Because there’s nothing like sitting with loved ones, and oohing and aahing as huge, beautiful fireworks go off in front of you.
Riverhills Church is one church that organized a fireworks celebration for last year’s 4th of July:
In case people got peckish after watching the fireworks, the church sold burger and hotdog meals at $5 a pop. It also brought in a dessert truck!
Just be sure to order your fireworks way in advance. Your church probably won’t be the only organization thinking of holding a fireworks celebration, so get your rockets and sparklers early to avoid disappointment.

3 tips for marketing your 4th of July event
1. Create posters to publicize your event
Once you’ve decided on your church’s 4th of July event for this year, you’ll need to promote it to get the crowds coming in. So let’s cover three such church marketing ideas next.
First, create 4th of July flyers for your event, providing key details on what’s happening, and when and where it’ll be held.
These flyers should include any other important information that interested attendees should know. These could be admission fees or event registration instructions, for example.
When your flyers are ready, print them for distribution or post them on your social media accounts.

2. Promote your event with videos
Once you’ve gotten the hang of creating flyers, take a shot at producing videos instead.
With their moving visuals and music, they might just draw attention to your church advertising campaigns more effectively than flyers ever can.
Here’s an example of a video promoting a 4th of July celebration, posted by Cornerstone Church:
In the past, making a video might have involved hiring an entire camera crew (and spending a lot of money in the process). But now, you can probably shoot amazing social media videos with just the smartphone in your pocket.
So whip out that phone of yours and start filming! Afterward, use a user-friendly video editing platform to add text, images, and sounds and make your video pop.
Here’s how you can create videos on PosterMyWall.
3. Set up a Facebook Event page to share event details
If you have many church members on Facebook, setting up a Facebook Event page for your 4th of July event can help you share information on it easily.
That’s because the Facebook Event page will let you highlight your event’s date, time, and location. You can also post event updates to the page and they’ll be sent to Facebook users who have indicated interest in the event.
And on their end, Facebook users can use the Facebook Event page to:
- Share your event with friends and family—the more the merrier!
- RSVP for your event so you can keep track of how many people will be coming, and then make preparations to accommodate them all.
- Add the event to their calendars, which will help them remember to turn up on the big day.
